Unfortunately, there are now few zero waste alternatives when it comes to prescribed medicine. (A couple of decades ago, medicine bottles were glass and these were collected, sterilized and reused by pharmacists).

Occasionally an easy alternative can be sourced, for example subbing Dispirin (containing aspirin, so you may need to check with your doctor first) for paracetamol. At the time of writing, Dispirin comes in foil which can be saved up with other household foil and sent to the scrap metal dealer.

Natural alternatives for minor things are really worth investigating. Here are just a couple of ideas,

  • For headaches, honey is surprisingly good – so is sleep and having a stress free life! Or a couple of sprigs of fresh rosemary steeped in a mug of boiling water. Take sprigs out and add a teaspoon of honey before drinking.
  • Alo vera on skin soothes itchy bites, rashes and lots of other skin issues.

I don’t know if we can all do this, but I was surprised to see how easy it was to rehome those dry-fresh bags inside pill containers. I collected them all and put on FreeCycle or TradeMe for free / $1 reserve. Some companies use natural versions, like rice. Its worth asking before you buy, helps them think it through too.
